National Parks and World Heritage Areas
The majority of UNESCO World Heritage Sites meet only one or two of the ten criteria to earn their status. The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is one of only 2 places in the world to have attained 7 out of 10 criteria!
Covering almost 1/5 of Tasmania’s land mass, the Tasmanian wilderness World Heritage Area, one of the world’s largest temperate wilderness areas, is a global and national wonder that protects an array of natural and cultural heritage. There are hundreds of archaeological sites, including several caves from the Pleistocene and early Holocene epochs and the region is home to some of the deepest and largest caves in Australia. Housing some of the oldest trees and tallest flowering plants in the world, the area is renowned for its unique and diverse flora and fauna.
